Today was another day that class was held outside of the classroom. For my Shakespeare Literature class we ventured out to the Globe Theatre for bit of a tour and information on the Globe. The Globe that is standing now is the third one of it’s kind. The first one had been burnt down, and the second one was demolished during the English Civil war. However during our walk we stopped along the original site of the Globe, which is just a little ways off the bank. The current Globe is as closely built to the orignial as possible, only because of safety issues. I love learning of theatre in Shakespeare’s time, such as the fact that women weren’t able to act, so the young teenage boys had to play the women. During our walk we also stopped somewhere that had nothing to do with Shakespeare but it really grabbed my attention. It is called Cross Bones’ Graveyard. It was inhitially a place for prostitues to get buried, because technically they were not allowed to have a proper burial by the church. It was also a graveyard for the ‘abandon dead’. The city is doing a lot of work to keep this area safe & memorialize it. I think that it’s absolutely beautiful, that even though they may be lost souls, they are not forgotten.
