June Recap

Hey all & Happy Friday!

I can’t believe that we are already at the end of June! This month flew by! I spent a lot of time this month with family celebrating some pretty important things, such as my grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary. You don’t really see marriages lasting that long anymore, so it really is special to celebrate a love that strong.  My grandparents got a blessing at their church & then we went on to eat, drink, & of course dance at the Hofbrauhaus in Cleveland. My grandma loves to dance, she was constantly pulling everybody up to dance with her. Remember, just because you’re 82 doesn’t mean you have to stop having fun!

June also was spent listening to jazz, which is one of my favorite things. I went to Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh with my mother & brother & sat outside with a little picnic in the park. We listened to some live jazz & sipped some wine, it was a perfect summer night. Spending time with my mom & brother is one of my favorite things; it’s something we don’t get to do as often as we used to, so when we get the opportunity I love every minute of it!

I also was able to see a couple family members that I haven’t seen in awhile at a party at my dads house, which was so much fun! I did some adulting as well in June which was not my favorite thing. I went through tons of job applications & interviews. Some of the employers never got back to me, one of the interviewers didn’t show on me, & I even supposedly got hired somewhere but they never got back to me! Despite all of these bad experiences I did get 2 jobs & I even choose to take part in this amazing business opportunity that I will tell you all about very soon! I applied for my first grown-up apartment as well! Things are changing which is pretty crazy but it’s changing for the better!

3 Ways to Style a Scarf

 

Hi all & Happy Monday!

Last week was crazy busy, with getting hired for two new jobs & filling out that paperwork; I’m just so happy for it to finally be over! I am really excited though that I finally have an excuse to get dressed up everyday. I thought I’d share with you all today my 3 favorite ways to style a scarf, I hope you enjoy!

1. In Your Hair 

I love love love adding scarves to my hair. It always adds a little extra to an outfit I think. I either make a top knot or low bun in my hair, then I wrap the scarf around the bun & tie a knot. I like to leave the remaining part of the scarf hanging down but you can tuck them in or even make it into a little bow!

2. Around Your Neck

I know styling scarves around your neck isn’t a new trend, but I’m so happy it’s back because it’s such a cool look. What I do is depending on the length of the scarf, I wrap it around my neck either once or twice and tie a knot. I move the knot over to be on the side of my neck so I can let the remaining scarf hang down. It’s such a carefree look & you can wear it with any type of look.

3. Around your ankle

This option is a little different, but I think it looks really cool! I’ve seen photos on pinterest where girls wear capris & then wrap the scarf around their ankle a few times. So I thought I’d give it a try & I think it looks great & adds a little extra pop to the outfit!

Why You Should Be Using Reusable Bags

Hi all & Happy Friday!

Today I am going to share with you something that I strongly care about; using reusable bags! I gave 3 speeches on this topic my senior year of college, a lot of research was conducted, & writing those speeches only strenghened my view.

My love of the ocean inspired these speeches, sharks are my favorite animals & their lives are being affected by these plastic bags. Plastic bags are taking over the ocean & destorying it’s ecosystem. Whales are ingesting plastic bags, a pilot whale in Thailand was found with almost 20 pounds of plastic bags in it’s stomach (Zachos, 2018). Whales are not the only animals that are being harmed by these plastic bags. Turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish & try to eat them, sea lions are getting wrapped up in them, & sea birds are eating small bits of plastic known as ‘microplastics’.  These animals are dying & their homes are being destroyed because of us humans.

So much plastic is being produced & a lot of it isn’t being properly disposed of. If plastic isn’t properly recycled it takes 400 years to decompose (Parker, 2017). I’m not going to go deep into the numbers & facts because trust me, I just won’t stop, but please check out the two articles that I’ve linked!

As you can tell so far I am not a fan of plastic bags. After making these speeches I’ve worked hard to make sure that I always have a resuable bag with me; whether I’m grocery shopping or going to the mall. I understand it can be hard to stop using plastic bags, they are literally everywhere! However, one resuable bag can make difference! Even if it’s just one bag you bring to the store, it’s one, or maybe even two, less plastic bags that you are taking home, or that end up in the ocean.  Many cities have something called a plastic bag tax; which means that consumers have to pay for plastic bags while they are shopping. I have come across plastic bag taxes in London & in Chicago & I think they are brilliant! Studies have shown that these taxes really do work & many consumers respond positively to the taxes as well. It encourages consumers to bring a resuable bag around with them & it makes them feel as though they are making a difference in the environment.

Reusable bags are super easy to come by, you can buy big bags at TJ Maxx & many grocery stores even offer them as well. When you buy bags & bring them to the grocery store they often give you discounts for using the bag! I have loads of bags & even though it’s just a reusable bag it does make me feel as though I’m making a impact. Companies have made some really cute bags as well, TJ Maxx has cute designs that they change around all the time. My favorite resuable bag right now is actually one that I got printed myself & passed around after my final speech. The bag features my favorite quotes; one of the quotes that I live by.

I hope you all reflect on this quote & really think about the impact that you could be making by recycling & using a reusable bag. If we don’t make changes soon we may lose the ocean, which is home to thousands of beautiful animals.

Do you play games?

Mostly board games! I grew up playing board games with my family & I love playing them. It’s brings together the family for some fun & also a little competition. 

What are your five favorite movies?

My 5 favorite movies is a little tricky! My top movies would have to be Waynes World, The Breakfast Club, Silence of the Lambs, The Grand Budapest Hotel, & Boondock Saints. 

Do you have a favorite animal?

I do have a favorite animal; it’s Great White Sharks! 

Where is your favorite place to watch movies?

My favorite place to watch movies is curled up in bed. I can be super comfy & pig out in bed. 

Where is your favorite place to read?

My favorite place to read is usually outside on my back patio. I can get a little bit of sun & a wonderful breeze & it’s all just very relaxing. 

If you could have a dream breakfast served to you, what would you order?

My dream breakfast would be a mimosa, eggs, bacon, toast & my book!

Do you have a favorite alcoholic beverage?

LOVE me some wine, but who doesn’t!

What is your most vivid childhood memory?

My most vivid childhood memory is running through these obstacle courses & completing these treasure hunts that my mom would set up for me & my brother in my backyard.

If you could have a house built anywhere in the world, where would it be?

A beautiful house a little outside of London, so I can have a beautiful little english garden. 

Where is the one place you want to visit, but haven’t yet?

Poland! It’s where my family is from but I haven’t managed to get there yet. I am going there on a cruise this summer so I cam super excited!

Glowy Summer Make-Up Look

Hi all & Happy Friday!

I’m so happy that it’s the weekend! This weekend is going to be a busy one, jam-packed with Indians Games, Grandparents 60th anniversary, & Father’s day! Since the weather is finally in summer mode here in Cleveland, & because I have such a busy weekend ahead of me I decided to share my Glowy Summer make-up look.  It’s super light weight, it makes your skin look super healthy, & it’s a look that I will be wearing all weekend!

These are just the products that I use & really love, there are many dupes for each of these products so just find what works best for you!

I start with washing my face; skin care is key to a good makeup look! (You can check out my skin care routine here on the blog!) I apply the Neutrogena face lotion after my face is nice & clean. This lotion is super hydrating & it also has a built in SPF which is very important!

Once the lotion has set in, I then apply the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue. I apply this prodcut with my fingers, I just feel that it gets better coverage that way. This product is sheer & light weight, so if you are looking for a product that will cover all sorts of blemishes this isn’t the product for you. I love the complexion rescue because it gives your skin this really healthy glow, it lets my freckles shine through, & it has an SPF built in as well!

Once I finish applying the complexion rescue I then work on my eyebrows. Even though this is a simple makeup look I like to fill in my brows a bit, I think it really frames the face & makes the whole look pop!

After the brows, I add a bit of the Becca highligher on the tops of my cheek bones. I also sweep the brush up my face from my cheekbones in a sort of  ‘C’ motion. I then add the highligher to the bridge of my nose and the cupids bow of my lip.

Once I’m all highlighted, I like to add a little bit more pink in my cheeks to give that healthy glow. First I smile so I am really able to see the tops of my cheeks; using the Coastal Scents blush I make circlular movements with my brush to apply the blush on the tops of my cheeks. I also like to swipe a little blush across my nose as well.

To finish the look off I use both the Too Faced mascara as well as Covergirl on my lashes.

My 5 Interview Tips

Hi all! Happy Tuesday!

I’m still trying to figure out a blogging schedule that works for me so sorry for the random postings!

Since I’ve recently graduated college the one goal in my mind is to get a job! It’s a current stressor that keeps me up at night sometimes. I’ve been putting myself out there & applying to jobs all over the place & taking part in all sorts of interviews. So because I’ve been going through the interview process I thought I’d share a few of my interview tips!

1. Look Your Best

The first tip is an obvious one; you always want to look your best for an interview! When putting together an interview outfit I always make sure to go for simple patterns, nothing too crazy, I usually stick with patterned dress pants & a solid colored shirt with some flats. Another tip is to wear something that is comfortable; if you’re anything like me you’ll most likely be nervous & you don’t want your outfit adding to your discomfort! Some of my favorite interview clothes from from H&M, New York & Company, TJ Maxx. They all have great selections of cute clothes that are also professional. If you’re short like me New York & Company has great dress pants that actually fit to the ankle!

2. Gum & Water

Before an interview my mouth goes completely dry with nerves & dry mouth can bring the feeling of bad breath. Personally, if I feel like I have bad breath I will be self-conscious about it & not be able to focus during the whole interview. So before my interview I make sure that I chew a piece of gum on my way there; chewing gum, to me, helps relieve some tension & anxiety. Bringing a water bottle along with you is KEY! Fill one up before your drive so you can have a drink on your way there; but more importantly so you can have it after your interview, because if you’re anything like me you’re completely parched after an interview.

3. Be Prepared

The job hunt is not just about searching for jobs & applying; you need to know who you are working for. Before your interview be sure to research the company/position you are applying for.  The things I always look for & write down is the company’s mission statement, their care approach, & their history. Since the jobs that I am looking for are in the mental health field I find it very important to see how prospective companies treat their patients. This research will not only benefit you but also impress your interviewer as well!

4. Plan Accordingly

I am someone who is always early, not matter what the occasion. The night before it is key that you plan your drive to your interview. Especially, if you live in a busier area, you need to plan around traffic patterns, to make sure that you are not late! I always arrive at least 15 min early, being early helps relieve some of my anxieties, because if all else goes wrong I know at least I made it on time! Even if you are taking part in a phone interview I make sure that at least 15 minutes before the expected call I go into a quiet room & try to get comfortable.

5. Smile & Be Polite 

Never underestimate the power of a smile! Going into an interview with a big smile & firm handshake makes a great first impression. A smile can show your positivity & it also makes you look happy to be there & interviewing. Be polite during the whole interview (obviously) & when you leave be sure to smile, shake their hand, & thank them again for taking the time to interview you.

What’s Left in the Fridge?: Bacon, Brussel Sprouts & Goat Cheese Spaghetti Squash

Hi all!

Do you ever have those days where you haven’t gone grocery shopping in a week; whether it be from laziness, or you’re going away soon, but now you have no food left in the fridge. Since this exact thing happened to me today I thought I would start a new series of posts called ‘What’s left in the Fridge?’  I had a few main ingredients lying around, such as a Spaghetti Squash that needed to be cooked. I searched ‘Spaghetti Squash’ on Pinterest & found this recipe from Buzzfeed by Christine Byrne, all the credit goes to her for this amazing recipe. However, since I did not have all of the listed ingredients I had to improvise a little. Some of the ingredients that I have listed are different from the original yet most ingredients & the instructions are the same. I’ve listed the original recipe below.

Buzz Feed Recipe

I am not a person who craves healthy food for snacks or for meals; I am more of a ‘give me all your french fries’ type of girl. So Spaghetti Squash really isn’t my ‘go-to’ meal; but my mom gave me the orders to cook the squash before it went bad. I personally have never had spaghetti squash before, I figured the only way I could eat it is if I added a few things I like, such as bacon & goat cheese. It’s a super easy & I actually really enjoyed it, so I hope you all enjoy it too!

Ingredients 

1 Spaghetti Squash

Olive Oil

2 TSP of butter

Salt & Pepper

4 Slices of Bacon

1 TBSP Red Wine Vinegar

1 TSP Maple Syrup

1 bag of Brussel Sprouts (I didn’t have any spinach around so I added Brussel Sprouts instead)

Garlic & Herb Goat Cheese, Crumbled

Cooking

  1. Preheat the oven to 400
  2. Cut the Spaghetti Squash into rings & remove all the seeds from inside of the rings. Drizzle olive oil on a pan lined with aluminum foil & place the Squash rings on the pan. Flip the rings on both sides so they are coated in oil. Sprinkle salt & pepper on both sides of the rings.
  3. Roast the squash for about 30 minutes. Once done set the squash aside to cool. IMG_0096
  4. Cut the ends of the brussel sprouts off & cut them in half. Wash them & add to a pan heated with butter & a bit of olive oil. Cook until browned. Cover for 2 minutes once browned until they are tender. Remove from pan. IMG_0095
  5. Slice the bacon into smaller strips & add to the same pan that the brussel sprouts were in. Cook until the bacon is crispy. IMG_0098
  6. The orginal recipe states to add Red Wine vinegar to deglaze the pan. Also, to turn the heat down low & add maple syrup. ( I don’t like sweet tastes in my meals so I added less maple syrup than originally called for)
  7. Gently with a fork peel away the squash from the outter skin. ( I was really surpised as how much you got out of one squash!)IMG_0097
  8. Add the brussel sprouts & squash to the pan with the bacon & mix well.
  9. Seperate the squash between bowls, top with goat cheese, & red pepper flakes if you’d like!

The Buzzfeed states that this recipe serves 2 yet I had some left over that my mom is going to have for lunch tomorrow!

I’ve really enjoyed writing & working on this post, it felt like I was playing my own little game of Chopped so I will definetly be posting more along the way!
